China wins bronze at world women's curling championship

COPENHAGEN - China defeated Denmark 10-9 Sunday to capture the bronze medal on the last day of the world women's curling championship in Esbjerg, Denmark.

Both teams had collected nine points at the end of regular time, but China scored the final and 10th point in an extra end to emerge as winners.

China scored two points in the second end, and three in the fourth, to go ahead 6-3 by halftime. But the hosts rallied back in the eighth end to draw level at 7-7.

The Chinese team won two points in the ninth, but Denmark held its nerve to earn two points as well for a 9-9 stalemate.

China, who missed out on playing in the final after losing to Canada in Saturday's semifinal, now hopes to build on its success in Denmark and make a strong impact on the curling contest at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

But Denmark's loss is heartbreaking for the hosts, who had strong aspirations for a medal.

Overall, China finishes the tournament with 9 wins and 5 losses, and Denmark comes fourth with 7 wins and 6 losses.

Sweden beat Canada 7-5 to win the final of the women's world curling championships Sunday.

Sweden has looked in command since the competition started last week. It sailed directly from the round-robin to the final having beaten China 7-6 in a tense play-off on Friday.
